SSE broadband reviews

Is SSE broadband any good? Find out whether it could be a good option for you to consider with reviews from real customers here.

Features
  • Affordable - SSE is among the cheapest providers in the UK
  • Fixed price guarantee - SSE promises no price rises throughout an 18-month contract
  • Happiness guarantee - customers can cancel without penalty in the first 60 days of joining

What's the verdict?

SSE is not the cheapest but is far from being the most expensive broadband provider. Its fibre broadband deals are good value with two packages offering average speeds of 35Mbps and 63Mbps respectively.

Considering the overall package, SSE also comes out well. If you have an active phone line there are no set up costs and no postage charges for the router, plus there is also the option to cancel for free 60 days after purchasing if you are unhappy.

All in all, the packages might cost more than some other budget providers like TalkTalk, Plusnet and EE – but it’s usually much cheaper than BT and Virgin Media.

We say

SSE broadband offers reliable and competitively priced packages. The fibre deals offer particularly decent speeds and are secure. While the supplied router is not the best out there, it does tick the box if you want a straightforward package that you can get to grips with easily. Contracts only come in 18-month fixed terms but the fixed price is a welcome touch. If you are not worried about adding on premium TV with all the extras the likes of BT and Sky can offer then SSE is a good option, especially as you can benefit financially from being an existing energy customer with them.

The provider

SSE might not be the first place you think of to go to for broadband, but it has established itself in the marketplace since 2008. Formally Scottish and Southern Energy, it is one of the UK’s best-known energy providers, employing 12,000 people across the UK and Ireland. It has carved a niche as a decent provider of competitively priced broadband packages and also offers deals to those who already use them as an energy provider. It also promises an attractive no-price-increase during the 18-month broadband contract.

The process

Like a lot of broadband providers, SSE offers a straightforward process. Pick your package, sign up and SSE will arrange things with your current provider (unless you are with Virgin Media). You will then be sent all your documents and your router. Just plug in on the day of the switch and away you go. SSE can also help you move your existing phone and broadband package or switch to its package at your new home. Moving home with SSE can take around 18 days though so advance warning is advised. There is no charge as long as you choose an SSE phone and broadband package for your new home and it isn’t more expensive than your old one.

The product

SSE offers an acceptable free router with its broadband deals. The router has dual-band technology giving a good signal in the home and has four ethernet ports too. It also includes a USB port for file and printer sharing. The router is easy to set up and use although it might not have enough power or advanced features for some, so if you think you will need improved signal strength and range then you will need to look at buying your own. If you cancel within the first year, you will need to mail your router back to SSE or pay an extra fee.

What are SSE's current broadband deals?

SSE offers three different types of broadband packages, Unlimited broadband (ADSL), Unlimited fibre and Unlimited fibre plus. All are over an 18-month, fixed-term contract using the Openreach network and come with a free wireless router and the promise of no price increases during the duration of the contract. Existing SSE energy users can also take advantage of deals and bundles where you can combine your energy and broadband for some cost-savings.

How fast is SSE broadband?

All three of SSE’s broadband packages are unlimited, so there is no need to worry about hitting a limit and being charged. The speeds of 11Mbps, 35Mbps and 63Mbps are typical of what is available from most broadband providers. Only Virgin Media offers significantly faster speeds.

SSE Unlimited broadband

This ADSL package comes with unlimited downloads and an average speed of 11Mbps and is a perfect package for everyday internet use, browsing, speaking with friends or watching films. Pricing is in the region of £20.

SSE Unlimited Fibre

With unlimited downloads and an average speed of 35Mbps, this makes a good choice if your household is regularly streaming, downloading HD movies or files, watching catch-up TV or online gaming. Pricing is in the region of £22 a month.

SSE Unlimited Fibre Plus

With unlimited downloads and an average speed of 63Mbps, this is perfect if your internet is being used at the same time by multiple users in your house. You can be safe in the knowledge that you will be able to download big files even if someone else is watching a film in Ultra-HD. Pricing is in the region of £26 a month.

How quick are SSE's broadband upload speeds?

SSE upload speeds are similar to most other providers, with standard average speeds of 1Mbps for its basic broadband and 9Mbps and 19Mbps respectively for the two fibre packages. These speeds will be easily fast enough for sending photos by email, uploading images to social media or making calls via Skype and FaceTime.

How is SSE broadband installed?

There is a one-off up-front fee of £30, which is waived if you are already an SSE energy customer, and the service should be up and running within 18 days.

If the engineer needs access to your home, SSE will contact you directly, if not then it will be done remotely. However, if you need a new phone line for whatever reason, you will be charged £60, which is the standard cost imposed by the Openreach network.

What's SSE's customer service like?

SSE offers the usual customer support routes but has a single point of contact for both customer service and technical support queries on 0345 071 9890. The customer support helpline offers phone support between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. You can also email at customerservice@sse.co.uk and use an online contact form to get in touch in writing.

Does SSE have a traffic management policy?

SSE packages are all unlimited, with no usage caps or charges. However, it’s worth noting that SSE is one of only a few broadband providers that still use a traffic management policy. This means that when the network gets busy at particular times of the day, it prioritises certain types of internet traffic over others, slowing speeds on certain web activities, in order to keep everyone’s connections stable.

Do you get any extras with SSE broadband packages?

SSE doesn’t offer many extras with its packages as it tends to keep a focus on keeping bills down. Saying that, there are a few freebies that are worth highlighting.

  • Rewards program: Customers can get exclusive early access to concert and sporting events at the SSE Arena, Wembley and the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

  • Parental controls: Free subscription to the Netintelligence Internet Security Suite, providing antivirus and parental controls.

  • Happiness Guarantee: You can cancel your broadband package for free within 60 days if you’re unhappy with the service.

Can I get SSE line rental with my broadband?

Line rental is included in all SSE broadband packages along with pay-as-you-go calls, which is what you need if you don’t use the landline much. There are three bundles available which will save you money depending on what you want.

  • Evening & Weekend (£4): Inclusive calls to local, national and UK mobile numbers in the evening and weekend.

  • Anytime (£8): Inclusive calls to local, national and UK mobile numbers at any time.

  • Anytime Plus (£12): The same as Anytime, plus international calls to 35 countries.
